AI for Creatives

NYU IMA Topics in Media Arts, Section 001 Fall 2023

Precognition, 2023 / DALL-E

It's rare in our history that we encounter something truly new — but that just happened.

We humans have always had a monopoly on creative communication. Now, there’s a new kid in town.

Seemingly suddenly, machines can make creative decisions on their own, producing everything from photographic and video images, to writing and music, computer code, dance notation, and architectural design.

As with human creators, quality varies, but that hasn’t stopped AI tools from rocketing forward in scope and sophistication, leaving us at a crossroads: Will we mold AI to our creative needs and aspirations, or vice versa?

This feels like a perfect time to gather in the classroom, to discuss, create, and debate, and to become literate together in the new language of creative AI.

Goals:

Get hands-on with the rapidly-evolving state of the art in creative AI technology, make new work in our chosen media, and reflect on how these tools impact our personal message-making and creative process.

Start a dialogue with AI tool makers, gain an understanding of their thinking and incentives, and influence them about how to make better tools.

Experience the work and thinking of creative practioners currently using AI: writers, artists, videographers, coders, designers.

Hear from editorial and legal experts about the new realities of ownership and authorship when AI is an active collaborator in the creative process.

And finally, harness this technology to enhance our shared sense of humanity, rather than letting it divide and isolate us.

We can’t predict the future, but we can consider the possibilities and prepare ourselves to play an active, satisfying, and influential role in it.
